NOBCChE Indianapolis is hosting a biotechnology conference on October 15 - 17th, 2009. This conference will help to further expose pre-college and undergraduate/graduate students, and post docs to the Life Science and Biotechnology environments. Overall, the fundamental stages for a sound Biotechnology integration initiative is for NOBCChE Indianapolis to implement this expression and exchange of Science and Engineering information with senior Eli Lilly Leadership through a three day Biotechnology Research Conference. This includes: a pre-college science fair, undergraduate/graduate students, and post docs research poster presentations, a Lilly Leadership Roundtable, tours of Lilly Biotechnology facilities, professional/technical research talks, and an awards reception.

In order to serve our audience better, we have broken up the activities into three days. Saturday will be devoted to Pre-College Students, where the students will be primarily engaged in a Science fair. Lilly scientist and engineers as well as others will have the ability to evaluate the scientific research displayed. They will be encouraged to discuss their research at length and provided excellent feedback to continually improve. The Pre-College student will participate in a luncheon with a Biotech/Bio-Pharma leader in his or her field. Next there will be an interactive panel discussion with Senior Lilly Biotechnology Leadership to provide the students with an understanding of the current and future Biotech/Bio-Pharmaceutical industry how specific educational pursuits can lead to careers in this industry. Next the student will participate in a Career Development session with representatives from Eli Lilly’s Human Resources department and Indiana University’s Pharmacy School. Finally, the student will take a tour of the newly constructed state of the art Clinical Trial Pilot Plant and Biotechnology Lab buildings. These tours will give student a firsthand glimpse of how Biotechnology is applied to science and engineering unit operations and laboratory scale designs. At the end of the day, students will participate in a awards ceremony where all participating students will be acknowledged, and the top 5 science projects will be given monetary awards.

Friday is devoted to Undergraduate/Graduate Students, and Post docs, where participants will be primarily engaged in a Poster Session. Lilly scientists and engineers as well as others academics will have the ability to evaluate and judge the scientific research displayed. The judges will discuss their poster at length and provided excellent feedback to continually improve the developing researcher. During the course of the day, these presenters will participate in a luncheon with a Biotech/Bio-Pharma leader in his or her field followed by an interactive panel discussion with Senior Lilly Biotechnology Leadership. Similar to the Pre-College discussion, this panel will provide insight as to the current and future Biotech/Bio-Pharmaceutical industry as well as a more detailed look at how their educational pursuits can lead to careers in this industry. With this information, participants will be armed with information that they will take into a career development session with representatives from Eli Lilly’s Human Resources department and Indiana University’s School of Medicine As the undergraduate/graduate students, and post docs contemplate this information, they will take a tour of the newly constructed state of the art Clinical Trial Pilot Plant and Biotechnology Lab buildings where they will see firsthand how Biotechnology is applied to science and engineering unit operations and laboratory scale designs and experiments at Eli Lilly. In the evening, the undergraduate/graduate students, and post docs will participate in a awards ceremony where all participating students will be acknowledged, and the top 5 science projects will be given monetary awards, followed by a networking event that you don’t want to miss.
