Undergraduate/Graduate students and Post Doc POSTER PRESENTATIONS

1. Aims of the Poster Presentations

  • Expose presenters to the Lilly Research Labs (LRL) Biotechnology business environment
  • Provide an opportunity for African American talent to interact w/ Lilly scientists and engineers to foster career goals and mentor-mentee relationships
  • Provide a platform for the presentation of collegiate level and beyond research to the scientific community
  • Stimulate student desire to pursue summer scientific careers consistent with LRL future business needs

2. Your Poster Presentation Topic areas should be related to the Biotech/Pharmaceutical Companies Focus Research Areas such as, but not limited to:

  • Cancer
  • Diabetes Care
  • Growth Disorders
  • Osteoporosis
  • Sepsis
  • Neuroscience
  • Erectile Dysfunction
  • Animal Health

3. Abstract Requirements

  • Margins: Allow one inch for top, bottom, left, and right margins.
  • Length: Text should not exceed 1\2 half standard 8-1/2' x 11' page. Use a type font in 11- or 12-point size (character/inch), preferable the 'Times' ('Times Roman') font, or 'Palatino' if 'Times' is not available, or a font that best resembles the 'Times' font.
  • Title: Leave 1-1/4' margin all around, i.e., top, bottom, left, and right. Center title and type in all capital letters, in bold. If title is more than one line long, single space between lines. Double space before proceeding with author?s names. Single space is defined as having no blank lines between text and double space is defined as having one blank line between text.
  • Authors and Affiliations: Center and type authors names (first name, middle initial, and last name). Capitalize only the first letter of each name. Designate principal author by placing an asterisk immediately following the author's name and before the comma and/or the superscript used to differentiate author affiliations. Designate the presenter at the conference by underscoring the author's name. If names require more than one line, please single space between lines.
  • Double space before proceeding with affiliations. Center and type the name of the company/business affiliation, department, followed by the city, state (use two letter postal abbreviation), and zip code. For multiple affiliations, use superscript (or parenthesized) Arabic numerals after the authors' names to match authors with appropriate affiliations. The matching superscript should precede the affiliation. Single space between each affiliation.  Double space before proceeding with 'Abstract' heading.
  • Abstract Heading: Center and type in bold print the heading 'Abstract' capitalizing only the first letter. Double space before proceeding with the text for the abstract.
  • Abstract Text: Type text, flush left to the margin (do not use paragraph indent). Leave 1-1/4' margin between the left and right edge of the paper and the text. Single space text and double space between paragraphs. Text should be no longer than 5000 words.
  • Illustrations: If illustrations are required as an integral part of the abstract, incorporate them into the text. Do not place them at the end of the Abstract text, unless this is appropriate placement based on the where the callout citation appears.

4. Poster Presentation Requirements and Suggestions

  • To participate, each person is required to pre-register on the website by September 30, 2009. On the day of the session, please report to the registration booth upon arrival to receive all conference materials and poster number.
  • Each author is responsible for mounting his/her material prior to the opening of the poster session and for removing it IMMEDIATELY after the close of the session. Authors can enter their assigned room approximately one hour prior to the start time of the session. We strongly recommend that you plan to finish installing your poster no later than 30 minutes before the start of your poster session.
  • Each horizontal poster board measures 4 feet high x 6 feet wide (including frame). All presentations must be confined to poster board itself. Computer display equipment, sound or projection equipment, freestanding or three-dimensional displays, demonstrations/experiments, or tables for handout materials are permitted in the poster session but are the sole responsibility of the participant for supporting.
  • Authors must remain with their posters for the duration of the session or as long they are scheduled by their division, as indicated in the technical program. They are expected to display and discuss their results and answer question from other attendees.
  • All posters should feature a title, your name, the name of the institution where the research was performed, and should credit other contributors, as appropriate.
  • Use a crisp, clean design. All lettering should be legible from about 5 feet (1.5 m) away. Title lettering should be about 2" to 3" (5 to 7.5 cm). Subheading lettering should be 1/2" to 1" high (1.25 to 2.5 cm). Text lettering should be approximately 24 points (1/4" or .625 cm).
  • Pack a sketch of your poster layout, measuring tape, push pins (NOBCChE Indianapolis will provide a reasonable supply of push-pins, although it is wise to bring your own), or Velcro, so you can set up your poster quickly. All material must be removable. You may not write, paint, or use paste on the board.
  • You may want to bring handouts of your abstract or copies of your data and conclusions to share with interested viewers. Some authors also provide sign-up sheets to record names and addresses of attendees who might wish more information, reprints, etc. Others may find having business cards useful for communicating.

5. Poster Presentation Awards

  • 5 awards will be given: 1st prize $1000, 2nd prize $500, 3rd prize $250, 4th prize $125, 5th prize $125.
  • In order to win a monetary award you must be present during the Saturday awards luncheon.
  • Lilly is sponsoring summer internships for 2010. Students will be selected for this special opportunity based on their abstract, poster presentation, resume, passion to work in a science and engineering environment, and involvement with NOBCChE Indianapolis.

6. Requirements/Expectations to win a Travel award

  • College students if you are seeking a TRAVEL AWARD first register and submit your abstract. Abstracts have to be submitted on-line before the abstract submission deadline, September 30, 2009.
  • You will be notified of TRAVEL AWARD acceptance within 2 weeks of submission by the NOBCChE Indianapolis Biotech Travel Coordinator.
  • Each travel award winner will share a room for 2 nites(max) at the Hilton Hotel(5 minutes from Lilly site). The NOBCChE Indianapolis Biotech Coordinator will confirm and discuss the following with you: 1)travel to conference arrangements; 2)room assignment and check-in/check-out; 3) transportation details;4) each award winner must attend at least 2 technical or research sessions on Saturday.
  • NOTE: DO NOT make your Hotel arrangements on your own! You will not be reimbursed if you do this.
  • Travel Reimbursements - All Travel Reimbursements will require submission of an expense report (Click Here for Expense Report). Once the Travel Expense Report and receipts are received, allow 2-3 weeks to receive your reimbursements.
